Shock-triggered formation of magnetically-dominated clouds

چکیده
Aims. To understand the formation of a magnetically dominated molecular cloud out of an atomic cloud. Methods. A thermally stable warm atomic cloud is initially in static equilibrium with the surrounding hot ionised gas. A shock propagating through the hot medium interacts with the cloud. We follow the dynamical evolution of the cloud with a time-dependent axisymmetric magnetohydrodynamic code. Results. As a fast-mode shock propagates through the cloud, the gas behind it becomes thermally unstable. The β value of the gas also becomes much smaller than the initial value of order unity. These conditions are ideal for magnetohydrodynamic waves to produce high-density clumps embedded in a rarefied warm medium. A slow-mode shock follows the fast-mode shock. Behind this shock a dense shell forms, which subsequently fragments. This is a primary region for the formation of massive stars. Our simulations show that only weak and moderate-strength shocks can form cold clouds which have properties typical of giant molecular clouds.

Magnetically Regulated Star Formation in Turbulent Clouds
We investigate numerically the combined effects of supersonic turbulence, strong magnetic fields and ambipolar diffusion on cloud evolution leading to star formation. We find that, in clouds that are initially magnetically subcritical, supersonic turbulence can speed up star formation, through enhanced ambipolar diffusion in shocks. The speedup overcomes a major objection to the standard scenar...
متن کاملAmmonia observations of bright-rimmed clouds: establishing a sample of triggered protostars
We observed 42 molecular condensations within previously identified bright-rimmed clouds in the ammonia rotational inversion lines NH3(1,1), (2,2), (3,3) and (4,4) using the Green Bank Telescope in Green Bank, West Virginia. Using the relative peaks of the ammonia lines and their hyperfine satellites we have determined important parameters of these clouds, including rotational temperatures and ...
متن کاملSpiral shocks, triggering of star formation and the velocity dispersion in Giant Molecular Clouds
We present numerical simulations of the passage of gas through a galactic spiral shock and the subsequent formation of giant molecular clouds (GMCs), and the triggering of star formation. In these simulations, we take account of the observed inhomogeneity, or clumpiness, of the pre-shock interstellar medium. As might be expected, the spiral shock forms dense clouds while dissipating kinetic ene...
متن کاملQuiescent Cores and the Efficiency of Turbulence-accelerated, Magnetically Regulated Star Formation
The efficiency of star formation, defined as the ratio of the stellar to total (gas and stellar) mass, is observed to vary from a few percent in regions of dispersed star formation to about a third in clusterforming cores. This difference may reflect the relative importance of magnetic fields and turbulence in controlling star formation. We investigate the interplay between supersonic turbulenc...
متن کاملObservational study of sites of triggered star formation
Context. Bright-rimmed clouds (BRCs) are isolated molecular clouds located on the edges of evolved HII regions. Star formation within these clouds may have been triggered through the propagation of photoionisation-induced shocks driven by the expansion of the HII region. Aims. The main focus of this paper is to investigate the current level of star formation within a sample of southern hemisphe...
